Filene's Basement-A Beauty of a Bargain

Filene's Basement-A Beauty of a Bargain

Ciao bella,

"I Just Got A Bargain at Filene's Basement!"
Everyone I know misses the Downtown Crossing Filene's Basement! What in the (bleep) happened there? It was supposed to come back in 2 years, all bright, shiny and New! I usually have excellent intuition. When I heard about and then photographed the tearing down of the old Filene's I knew deep down it wasn't coming back! Truly a loss! I purchased makeup from Japan and perfume from France at prices I could afford! I can remember my first bargain at 18 years old the first time my fellow Cosmetology classmates walked me down into the Basement. I found a fabulous pair of designer Charles Jordan shoes! I couldn't believe the discounted price.

Upon return visits as the down escalator delivered me to shop heaven my head would bounce up to the ceiling scouring for the huge Automatic Markdown Signs! Four square dates to glare upon defined your bargain of the day. Has anyone ever hid an item knowing that the very next day is 50 % off? I found my $200 Emanuel sweater (paid $50) in a petite section. The day I purchased it was a bargain price of 75% off! After purchase the sales ladies were all pointing at me and congratulating me on my bargain!

Recently at Brookline's Public Library there was a documentary "Voices From The Basement." The room was packed full of salesladies that had worked 60 years, 30 years etc. and all their wonderful stories as well as all of us ex-Basement shoppers. Many of us wore the clothes and jewelry we purchased from the Basement identified with hand-written labels. I wore my Emanuel sweater with my earrings and matching scarf, both Salvatore Ferragamo and my first Cameo! One lady shopper even wore her moth eaten sweater! My husband David wore Filene's Basement from hose to bow tie!

The documentary was brilliant filming through the years. The running of the Brides sale, the lines of shoppers rushing the rope, the pulling and tugging of items and the closing of the Basement breakfast were a few memorable moments captured on video! The film-makers, Susan D. Edbril and Michael Bavaro, made this memory thinking that Filene's Basement would be returning! Their insight has brought us back in time when the "date" was the most important part of our day! Bravo!

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!

Hollywood The Beautiful!

Hollywood The Beautiful!

Ciao bella,

Max Factor with his Beauty Calibration Machine.
Cruising in our blue Mustang convertible on my recent trip to California I truly enjoyed all the glamour there was to muster up! People would stare and say, "Wow, who are they?" I am a sap for all the stargazing I did! Even the foot and handprints at Grauman's Chinese Theatre made me feel close to all the stars I love! A trip to Santa Monica led us to Marion Davies' guesthouse with pool. I could only imagine looking at the long row of windows the luxurious glamour that was pioneered there! And oh the fun in the pool! The actors of days gone by stand out strongly in my mind! The days of writers!

Upon entering the Hollywood Museum and greeted by a Patrick Swayze look-alike I was struck by this Art Deco palace as it used to be The Max Factor Building. The first floor housed all the makeup memorabilia from the "For Blondes Only Room" -- Marilyn Monroe, Lucille Ball to Joan Crawford! Their hair dryers, their glassed-in mirrored vanities and the lot! Even a telegram to Mae West inviting her to the latest Max Factor line introduction from Max himself! Technicolor blood, grease paint and theatrical powder were some evidence of an era gone by.

Does anyone remember the actresses' black and white photographs so perfect looking? The makeup was perfection. Many owe it to Max Factor. In 1932 the legendary Max Factor devised an ingenious invention combining phrenology, cosmetics and a scientific analysis to a women's facial imperfections. The Beauty Calibrator was invented -- also known in the trade as The Beauty Micrometer --, proving that a natural "Perfect Face" was a myth.

"Flaws almost invisible to the ordinary eye become glaring distortions when thrown upon the screen in highly magnified images ... the device remotely resembling a baseball mask, fits over the head and face with flexible metal strips which conform closely to the various features. The strips are held in place by setscrews, allowing for 325 possible adjustments. If for instance the subjects nose is slightly crooked -- so slightly in fact, that it escapes ordinary observation -- the flaw is promptly detected by the instrument and corrective makeup is applied by an experienced makeup artist"--Max Factor Cosmetics Co., 1932

This is the only Beauty Calibrator in existence. The human face has flaws can be recognized by this invention and then can be corrected with pancake shading makeup applied precisely to achieve the "perfect face." Imagine that! My quest toward facial perfection is answered.

After all my, Mom would say, "If the movies in Hollywood won't hire me maybe the comic strips will! "

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!

Gold And Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend!

Gold And Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend!

Ciao bella,

The beauty of shopping for jewelry! I mean the real stuff that is a defining experience all its own!

I was 19 years old and was ready to purchase my first piece. My hairdressing friends at the time brought me to The Jewelers Exchange Building in downtown Boston. Of course because where on earth would you get a great deal and exceptional customer service? Everyone traveled far and wide to The Jewelers Exchange Building. I remember the rows of shops with glimmering gold, pearls and diamonds! After viewing many neck chains, bracelets and earrings, I decided on a 30 inch, 14K herring bone neck chain! The golden shimmer was dazzling! I enjoy it still to this day with various large dangling charms I've collected during the years! In the Jewelers Building I had my Nana and Mom's diamonds transformed into my wedding rings and other rings beautifully! As time has passed I have purchased many more beautiful pieces there including my charm bracelet, which needs one last needed charm "a palm tree"! Since I am writing this from my West Hollywood hotel room I see it only fitting!

The Jewelers Building is celebrating its 90th Anniversary now in 2012. It was established in 1922 at 333 Washington Street in the area we now know as Downtown Crossing. It is the heart and soul of Boston's jewelry industry. When this beautiful Art Deco building opened there were over 100 retail stores. You would find appliances, luggage, jewelry and other accessories with customer satisfaction as their top priority. This exceptional service has been passed from generation to generation.

Still home to over 125 jewelers, expert craftsman, designers, pearl stringers and goldsmiths, The Jewelers Building continues its quality and expertise with great value as the greatest source for diamonds and fine jewelry in the city of Boston and beyond.

The Jewelers Building is launching a campaign to celebrate its 90th Anniversary to remind customers new and old of its exceptional value and commitment of service.

So take a trip Downtown and see what a little shimmer can do!

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!

B & B Cream Takes Care of it All!

B & B Cream Takes Care of it All!

Ciao bella,

I have noticed for a long time now, ads and talk about B and B Cream.Well what is it anyway? B and B, all I could think of was Bread and Butter! And so many other combos!

It's Beauty Balm or in some cases Blemish Balm. So I decided to purchase some. I liked what it was offering as a cover up cream you can use under your makeup. Essentially a primer it also can be worn alone. Some B&B's have a luminescent glow also with different SPF's. I would consider them all a necessary part of our makeup regime for all of us complexion conscious gals! Quick and easy to look great all day!

A primer goes under your foundation or can be used alone. When applied it looks like the cheesecloth effect when a photographer applies the cloth over the lens! It really does work and makes your skin velvety and dewy looking! Just a few colors to choose from for every brand. So in essence a B & B Cream carries many different advantages instead of just one. It can be a primer, a coverup with a bit of color, an iridescent- pearly look, an SPF with different ranges of protection and enough color to wear it alone. Check your brand name's labels and which B & B Cream is best for you! They can be found in your local drugstore to high end department stores! Pricing from $15 to $50! So put some glow on and be beautiful with a B & B Cream!

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!

To Curl or not to Curl-that is the Question!

To Curl or not to Curl-that is the Question!

Ciao bella,

My cosmetic world is filled with all kinds of Beauty-Fix-Me-Ups. You know the "tricks of the trade" from concealers, eyebrow wax to the subject of today -- eyelash curlers! I own two pair. One plastic that folds up for travel and is lightweight. I also own the typical metal brand with rubber padding. I like using them when I am not using mascara and my lashes are tinted since they are light. Only upper lashes should be curled. Just use hot blow dryer on curler to warm them and curl away! They truly work! Using an eyelash curler with mascara is a personal preference. Trying and seeing is believing! You can also find battery-operated curlers with a heating element installed. The original metal device was invented by William McDonell and patented in 1931.

So through the years I did take the time to sometimes curl my lashes with the standard metal curler. It certainly does work making curly lashes. It is a look for sure! However is it worth the trouble? I also remember my friends who attended a strict parochial high school with no makeup rules. My cousin would apply Vaseline on her already natural dark lashes and curl them. Really great! In fact she was accused many times that she was wearing mascara.

I also found that by curling it stimulates lash growth. Caution must always be applied with a curler. A gentle hand should be used and curler lightly warmed as not to burn skin!

To curl or not to curl? Find out and see!

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!

Beauty is in the Laughter!

Beauty is in the Laughter!

Ciao bella,

Mary with Italian-American Comic and Massachusetts Native, Mario Cantone.
Happy Anniversary to me! It has been 10 years writing my beauty culture column for the wonderful Post-Gazette this summer! It has given me full rein to express myself and my opinions from beauty rituals and beauty product to where beauty lies in all aspects of our lives! I thank the staff at Post-Gazette for all they do for me personally and of course to the editor my friend Pam Donnaruma whose family has made it possible for several generations for writers as myself to share with our peers our expressions of everything an Italian newspaper is worthy of! God bless you all for this privilege!

I mentioned laughter as my headline and laughter shall be the beauty tip this week!

This past weekend brought my husband and me back to Provincetown! We took the fast ferry and was greeted by our best friend Rich J. who picked us up in his jeep and touted us around for days! Fun in the sun and kept cool in the pool afternoons!

Recently, a popular morning TV show introduced Mario Cantone as their guest! He was Charlotte's wedding planner as well as a good friend to her in Sex and the City on TV and in the movies! A comedian at his best! He hails from Stoneham, Mass. Not many stand-ups make me laugh but Mario holds a special place in my heart! He was playing Provincetown's Art House and I was determined to make it! And laugh we did all night! Designer-to-the stars Bob Mackie and cabaret singer Marilyn Maye were in our audience as well! We split our sides! I felt so wonderful from the experience. Luckily enough we were just sitting for dinner and there was Mario! Oh my God I am going to meet and kiss Mario! And I did! He stayed and chatted and life could not have been better at the moment! So when a last minute opportunity arises to laugh-take the plunge and do it out loud!

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder: A Theatre Weekend in New York City!

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder: A Theatre Weekend in New York City!

Ciao bella,

I love a "get away weekend"! I feel it rejuvenates the soul. Don't get me wrong I adore my Boston digs however nothing like a trip away to feel a richness of experience that surely brings out the beauty in all of us!

I subscribe to the New York City Guide monthly and it does inform me in printed glory all the latest happenings in New York City. The new restaurants, museum exhibits, shopping and, of course, what's playing on Broadway. I do have an endless love for live theatre. I am also a huge fan of television's "Big Bang Theory". The storyline of that 30-minute sitcom is the antics of four brilliant, socially awkward friends, one engineer and three physicists, along with the pretty blonde neighbor who is a waitress wanting to become an actress, all living in Pasadena, California! Only four are geeks! Can you guess? The geekiest, and main star of this show, is Jim Parsons. He is absolutely wonderful. He also reminds me of my David a bit and since they have the same bathrobe I know there are other similarities.

Jim Parsons is playing the starring role of Elwood P. Dowd in this old time play called "Harvey" on Broadway! The story about a man who lives in a beautiful home with his sister and niece and his imaginary friend, a six-foot-tall rabbit named Harvey! It's a marvelous comedy with layers of emotions and the kind, gentle manners of Elwood P. Dowd. It made me think why more people should be more like Elwood who just wanted to make everyone happy, made a gal blush in a proper way, could care less about the materialistic side of life and loved a cocktail or two without regret! Laughing is good for the soul and laugh we did with Harvey. There were also tears of realization that Elwood's naïveté and gentle way just barely exist in our world. I believe it existed in my parents world!

So now I go about my day if there is a question or problem and ask "What would Harvey/Elwood say?"

Change is hard most of the time. But watching Harvey changed my life and its perspective for the better! So go on take that trip and find some Beauty to add to your life!

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!

Base Coat and Top Coat -- the Absolute Bread in the Nail Polish Sandwich

Base Coat and Top Coat -- the Absolute Bread in the Nail Polish Sandwich

Ciao bella,

Years of experience as a nail tech truly proved to me and my clients that the right base coat and top coat are essential during a manicure session. They both help to make the polish adhere to the natural nail. They also help to prevent chips and breaks of the natural nail. Some colored polishes especially non-professional colors have a strong pigment and when a base coat is not applied will stain the nail with pigment that is a yellow or orange tint. If you are getting a pedicure always insist you want a base coat applied to your toes before polish. Some techs take a short cut by not applying the base coat. Even when applying your own polish always use a base and topcoat on nails and toes!

Base coat works like a double sided sticky tape. After applying base coat, polish color will effectively bind to natural nail providing a receptive to polish forming a tight bond. Base coats contain plasticizers which act with a flexible element causing the natural nail to bend and not break. They also contain cellulose creating that double sticky layer so polish will adhere to natural nail as well as the polish.

Top coat, usually clear acts as a sealer that is applied on top of top dried polish and very tip of natural nail to ensure long lasting results of polish. Top coat also provides a high gloss shine and should dry in a few minutes. Nitrocellulose is responsible in adding the high gloss shine. Top coats also contain plasticizers for flexibility. Nail scientists formulated these two remarkable coatings with different mixtures of ingredients to create a long lasting manicure. We professional nail technicians thank them for that and all their extensive research to make our industry a successful and healthy environment! For a natural nail consult, call me anytime!

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!

Essential Oils Can Make Your Day

Essential Oils Can Make Your Day

Ciao bella,

Ahhhhhh -- Aromatherapy! It can bring you back to childhood, a trip to Italy, Nana' s cooking or just a marvelous state to put you in a better mood! As of this moment I have incorporated a "lemon tonic" (smells more like lemon meringue pie) into my Natural Nail Manicures! Essential oils are used professionally to enhance a salon experience, use as a room air freshener, and also to create perfume. Why not bring it into your life!

There are rules of the trade when using Essential Oils. They should always be diluted with a carrier oil. There are many such as sweet almond oil, grape-seed, rose hip or soybean etc. You cannot use an Essential Oil in its pure form. Mixing 3 or 4 oils together with a carrier oil can be pure heaven!

Investing in an Aromatic Book or just searching for different scents and their qualities can prove most therapeutic when put to use, quite easily!

Here are some Essential Oils and their qualities:

Lemon. Booster for immune system, refreshing, uplifting, relieves anxiety and depression

Chamomile. Calming properties soothing skin that is itchy, has eczema, soothes nerves and anxiety.

Cinnamon. Antiseptic use, relieves tension and exhaustion.

Lime. Mood elevator, energizes, refresher, also aids in fatigue

Jasmine. Relaxing, calming, rids depression

Ginger. Aids in aching muscles and joints, good for circulatory issues, nervousness, sharpens senses

Geranium. Astringent, balancing, tension and fatigue relief, antiseptic properties

Lavender. Calming, soothing, mood lifter, relaxing

Frankincense. Stabilizer, soothes and calms, developer for inner strength

Marjoram. To treat migraine, general headache, depression, stress and anxiety

Thyme. For better memory and concentration, muscle aches and pains, fatigue relief

These Essential Oils are just a few of the many that are used in bringing to you good Karma!

So take a whiff and feel it!

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!

Vidal Sassoon; Architect of Hair 1928-2012!

Vidal Sassoon; Architect of Hair 1928-2012!

Ciao bella,

So as life goes we have lost another icon of the Beauty World. Vidal Sassoon, who wanted to be a star soccer player, ended up a star Master Stylist. Coming from an orphaned background, and abandoned by his father at age 3, he rose to the pinnacle of success throughout the world!

Raised in London, he apprenticed with a hairdresser at age 14 during WW II. His vision promoted an attitude where women would not be chained to sets and perms at the salon. He opened his first salon in 1954 in London. His modern styles introduced us to geometric shapes and perms inspiring wash and wear cuts. The classic "bob" cut became one of his signature styles and was redesigned by a hair cutting technique. Blunt and geometric shaping brought Vidal to the forefront of his industry! Always designing hair with low maintenance in mind he revolutionized the cosmetology world, sweeping the sixties with his mod trend! Cutting with precision, he produced asymmetric coifs attracting Hollywood stars, models and singers becoming "king of the cut"!

The Beauty Industry is a better place since Vidal Sassoon developed his salon, schools and product lines in a legendary fashion. His famous quote "If you don't look good, we don't look good" should be the mantra for all salons and spas!

He will be the most celebrated architect of hair this generation will ever see. May God bless him and his family. May the legend live on!

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!

All That Zazz on The Road

Post-Gazette readers gathered, Saturday, May 12th, at Pagliucca's Restaurant to hear "All That Zazz" columnist Mary DiZazzo-Trumbull offer beauty tips. Post-Gazette columnist Freeway popped in to add his two bark's worth to the procedings.

West End Museum Remembers Boston's Burlesque Era

The West End Museum came alive with the celebration of Boston's Burlesque Era with costumes from celebrated performers. The closing of the exhibit, which was curated by Mina Murray, burlesque head mistress of The Boston Academy of Burlesque Education, was Friday, May 11th. The closing evening featured the Boston Babydolls, founded in 2006, who strutted their stuff! The director/producer Scratch of the Boston Babydolls looked on, proud of his troupe!

Beautiful Is Burlesque!

Beautiful Is Burlesque!
Ciao bella,
A few weeks back my husband David and I experienced a rare opportunity in Boston which used to be an every night occasion here in our fine city! The West End Museum gave us an evening of fine music and Burlesque. We admired a display of some of the best Burlesque Costumes from back in the day! Bright feathery gowns with embellished scarves, gloves and a few other "small things" set the tone of what was to come! Elaborately decorated g-strings and pasties set Burlesque dancers apart from other adult entertainers!

We enjoyed Kristen Minsky, of Providence, R.I., fan dance while sexy music was played by the well-known John Licata Sextet! Certainly reviving a nostalgic atmosphere the band played on and on!

Some other famous Burlesque gals were Sally Rand whose notorious fan dance wowed audiences for decades! She caused a national scandal by performing her first "obscene" dance at the 1933 Chicago's World Fair! Then went on to become the World's Greatest Fan Dancer!

Ann Corio was called the Burlesque Queen of Broadway and is well known for her acting as well. She performed at our very own Boston's Old Howard Theatre as well as the famous Minsky's Burlesque. Catch some wonderful black and white full blow-ups behind the bar at Scollay Square on Beacon Street of some of these divas.

A recently retired beauty (2009) is Angie Pontani. She incorporated ballet en pointe in her routine and worked a square of chiffon like a butterfly. This Miss Erotic World donned exquisite long brunette, wavy locks, which enhanced her delicate, graceful and seductive moves!

At Hubba Hubba in Cambridge, years ago, David and I met Dita Von Teese. In the pouring rain we made it to meet this adorable Burlesque Queen! Best known for her Burlesque act "Le Bain" where she swishes and splashes in a giant bubble bath in a giant Martini Glass! Her vintage style is reminiscent of the past and reflects in her stage performances!

So have in little fun in your life when "you take it off, but not all off"!

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!

Makeup Tricks To Look Younger -- We All Need Them!

Makeup Tricks To Look Younger -- We All Need Them!

Ciao bella,

I have picked up many kinds of makeup this past year and the best way to use them! Here is what I found from the experts and myself. Tried and true are all these facts.
  1. Using a primer after your moisturizer has set in is a must. Primer actually smoothes out your skin with a "cheese-cloth" effect making your face appear smoother! I've been using primer for years. Use alone or under foundation. Absolute magic!
  2. Foundation for mature skin should be light and airy, not heavy and thick. A foam or air-brush spray foundation should be purchased. The advancement in technology of these new applications gives a flawless look!
  3. A liquid illuminating high lighter (containing light-reflecting particles) should be used above blush line; on brow bone and can be mixed in with foundation to make skin look radiant and hide flaws! Truly a must!
  4. Use a matte concealer under eye sweeping from inner nose to end of eye. Apply a pale yellow face powder with brush over concealer to make eyes bright and youthful. Works every time!
  5. Use cream blush along the cheekbone for a dewy finish. Powder blush exaggerates fine lines and sits atop the skin's surface.
  6. Enhancing shades of Rose lipstick give off a younger appearance. When applying lipstick, dab around the border of your lips making the edges soft not giving attention to fine lines around your mouth!
  7. Use washable mascara since the waterproof is rough on removing and delicate lashes!
Well glamazons that's just a few of the secrets to a younger and better looking appearance.

I will be giving a private Beauty Talk over lunch and will give out name brands of product I have used and love! If you are interested call me for more info! Happy Spring and keep looking marvelous!

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!

Wedding Fireworks Display, Boston Inner Harbor, Saturday, May 19th

Ocean State Pyrotechnics, Inc is sponsoring a wedding fireworks display on the waters of Boston Inner Harbor in the vicinity of Anthony's Pier 4, Boston, MA. The Captain of the Port (COTP) Boston has determined that fireworks displays in close proximity to watercraft and waterfront structures pose a significant risk to public safety and property. Such hazards include obstructions to the waterway that may cause marine casualties and the explosive danger of fireworks and debris falling into the water that may cause death or serious bodily harm. Establishing a safety zone around the location of this fireworks event will help ensure the safety of spectators, vessels and other roperty and help minimize the associated risks. This proposed safety zone will encompass a 450-foot radius around the firework barge.

The fireworks display will occur from approximately 8:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. on May 19, 2012. To ensure public safety the proposed safety zone will be enforced immediately before, during, and immediately after the fireworks launch. If the event is cancelled due to inclement weather, then the proposed safety zone will not be enforced.

It's a Mad, Mad Men's World!

It's a Mad, Mad Men's World!

Ciao bella,

I always admired the '60s. I was just a kid but I loved the "cat eye" drawn liner as it swept across ones lashes, just like Elizabeth Montgomery's "Samantha" in Bewitched! The face make up, so pale, but yet with a translucent, luminous glow was seen in all the popular glamour magazines. Pressed powders, frosted blush with dramatic thick and sometimes spiked lashes were also trendy. Max Factor put out Eye Shadow Sticks of "Iridescent Beige Mist" & "Misty White."

Bronzers and Bronzing were also quite popular. Remember in the sixties having a tan was a good thing and fashionable since warnings of sun damage were still in the future. Sun worshippers used a mix of baby oil and iodine for what we would now call Snookie-esque color!

The hairstyles, from the flip to the beehive, were just what I wanted when I grew up! Oh and that Taboo Perfume that I would sneak a spritz from Mom's bureau! Hairpins and combs were what I wanted to own! Hairspray topped the list of all beauty products with brands like Adorn and White Rain. And for straight, flat bangs, just a dab will do of Dippity-Do and some of that pink hair tape!

Yes the seventh decade of the 20th Century was a place I wanted to be as a grown-up! My Mom's Jackie Kennedy-like bouffant was back combed (teased) and sprayed and took on statuesque proportions in more ways than one! Truly a work of art! Dreamy, creamy pearls were Mom's fav jewelry! All shapes and sizes.

All of it looked so glamorous to me! She and my Dad would attend Dahlia Balls, political parties with sparkly ball gowns and monkey suits! All their friends would come by for the obligatory cocktail and photo session! I was in awe of it all!

One evening last month, the 38th floor of One Federal St. was transformed into the offices of Sterling, Cooper, Draper, Pryce as the Harvard Club of Boston celebrated a 1960s Mad Men evening and I got to live out my dream!

Under my leopard pill box hat was a coiffed French Twist, sprayed to death! Pearl drop earrings that were Mom's, along with her gold, Washington, D.C., Capital pin, 1961! I wore my John F. Kennedy for President button; David wore his Nixon/Lodge button! I also used my vintage leopard purse with ivory gloves and lots of creamy pearls were 1960s worthy! To complete the atomic-era look we picked up a pack of unfiltered Lucky's and passed them out! But I really feel that David's present for my Christmas Birthday, the champagne mink stole, had something to do with our winning the Best Dressed title for the event! I'll take it and my dream too!

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!

A Tale of a Beauty Career

A Tale of a Beauty Career

Ciao bella,

If I could write a book I would love to title it "If This Table Could Talk". After all, I've spent most of my career at a manicuring table, with draws I might add! More on the draws later!

In fact my Dad would call it "the ladies on the half hour" -- lovely every one! I've had the unique experience of listening to the most juicy stories, holiday fiascos, love gone bad, travel tips on what not to do, recipes for not only food but for the ingredients for a perfect storm pertaining to marriage and in-laws, wonderful trips, childhood memories, yes the bad and the very good!

"BLandover" was not so bland after all! From one of my first managers "Danny" I would hear please make sure you don't book the appointments back to back with ex-wife #1 and present wife #2! OK!

And make sure that when a lady books a manicure and she has a broken nail, fix it because it's like she has a broken arm! Of course he didn't say arm! But you get the point!

It's been quite a road of manicuring tables, chairs, bottles of nail polish, no shows, cuticle remover and nail files and nail glue. When I was graduating from high school Mom would say you must learn a career otherwise you'll end up smelling glue at the shoe factory! I decided to follow my Mom and Nana's career of cosmetology. I still ended up with glue on my table but it is a most esteemed tool since I abhorred acrylic and gel nails. I use the glue to wrap tips with silk and repair weak/ broken nails in a more natural way of preserving the health of the Natural Nail. It has become my insignia! Mary For Nails-the Nail Doctor!

I hate too many changes! I hate moving! In fact I am celebrating 20 years of living in the same building on Beacon Hill! I enjoyed my very own salon in Andover for 13 years but when health issues came into play I decided to play it down. Good ole Dad said work from our house after all Mom enjoyed her Beauty Shop here at the home in Methuen forever! All my lovely ladies followed for almost 4 years. I spent quality time with Daddy-o and he did greeting the ladies! Naturally all good things end.

I was back in Andover, which I loved, for only 6 months. It was one of those "too good to be true" and when will my bubble burst kind of deals. The owner had to move and when she did she told me we would not be using "draws" and that there were no draws on our new manicuring tables! Needless to say but bye-bye was in order!

So now I'm back to where I belong! Dellaria in Andover! Back to a hair salon where co-workers will greet me with open arms. And a salon from years ago that I knew my tombstone would bear my name in their parking lot! Full circle, as Leslie well noted. Oh yes I thought of "throwing in the towel"! But after all the "lovely ladies" have become my dear and most loyal friends. And we all need a good recipe once in a while!

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!

Soften Up!

Soften Up!

Ciao bella,

Everybody feelin' that alligator skin just about now? I never really experienced it till just a few years ago. After all extreme temps and environmental changes will play havoc on your skin. First of all before we can see true results of our body moisturizer we must exfoliate the dryness which is dead skin. One of the best ways is in the steam room! Or even at home in a steamy tub! After about 10-15 minutes the steam softens that dry skin and it will just roll off with your fingers or a loofah sponge! Really! There is also a mitt that is used in the baths in Morocco. You can find the mitt in specialty stores. Works wonders!

Always remember that after exfoliating your product will WORK and go a long way! Then your skin is in for a good deep conditioning and moisturizing treatment. The KOSMEA line from Australia has a wonderful Rescue Balm that keeps skin glowing and soft! Formulated with certified organic Rose Hip Oil in a preservative free formula and used together with their Rescue Body Cream with certified organic Rose Hip Butter, I promise a baby soft experience!

LUSH has a wonderful Body Butter "BUFFY" -- with shea butter that is used in the shower. Has a great nutty scent! To kick-start a softening regimen on your feet that haven't seen the light of day for months, Lush has a "Stepping Stone Foot Scrub". Made with pumice, sea salt and cocoa butter, it will sure make a difference once barefoot season arrives. Tried it and loved it!

Once you exfoliate properly you must nourish your skin with excellent product to ensure healthy skin. The Rescue Balm can be used on cuticles, elbows, feet and heels, scars etc. -- a miracle in a jar! Call or email me with any questions on these fine products and where to purchase them.

So get soft now!

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!

No need to wear makeup when you'll be wearing a mask for Carnevale!

No need to wear makeup when you'll be wearing a mask for Carnevale!

Ciao bella,

Marilyn and Mary
Here is a bit of history of Carnevale in which many participated in this past week! In the year 1162 in Venice the Carnevale of Venice was born. Originating from a victory of the "Repubblica della Aquileia" which was Venice's original home. So, in defeating the Patriarch of Aquileia that year the victory was honored with a festival of dancing and reunions celebrated in San Mark's Square!

This annual Carnevale Festival held in Venice, Italy starts 58 days before Easter and ends on Shrove Tuesday (Fat Tuesday or Martedi Grasso), the day before Ash Wednesday.

Masks being a tradition of celebration of many sizes and names depending on coverage of the face are worn at Carnevale. The mask would hide the wearer's identity and social status permitting the wearer to mingle among high society and his peers with no recognition. These encounters could be used as personal, criminal or romantic intentions. Romantic intentions such as the masked ball in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet!

This past weekend ITALIA UNITA of East Boston showed us a taste of Carnevale! Full screening of actual festival parade in Venice during Carnevale was shown! Dancing and traditional music was enjoyed by all. Real and colorful paper mâché items were on display! The giant cannoli was my fav! Coffee and drinks were served with Pignolata (a Sicilian specialty) and Chiacchiere literally translated into "chatter," "chit chat" or "gossip" however is a strip of sweet pastry dough fried and coated with sugar! It was sheer delight as we chatted with all our friends as we enter the solemn Lenten season!

Thanks Lisa for all your work!

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!

The Vanity of It All

The Vanity of It All

Ciao bella,

How many of you gals get your face on in the bathroom? I could never understand it. However I'm sure it's the majority of ladies who hit the bathroom to use the mirror standing with ill lighting and steamy from showering! Makeup tubes and caps flying all over the floor! Well it is never too late to find a nice place in the bedroom for a vanity with mirror! Why as far back as I can remember I owned a lighted makeup mirror and would sit down in front of it and primp. We even bought a mini vanity for Dad's house when we would stay over on the weekend.

When I set up housekeeping in my first apartment I recall spying a walnut vintage vanity at Harold's Broadway Second Hand Store in Lawrence. Its chocolate elegance held a magnificent mirror which was built in and adjusted in a swing motion to your better side. There were two drawers on each side and one in the middle. Plenty of space for makeup of all kinds, hair accessories and brushes and combs, even jewelry and just about everything a "Glamazon" like me would need to play "makeup"!

I remember purchasing this Cadillac of cabinetry before I bought the bed! When Mom would visit she would always remark that she thought I was getting ready for my close-up in the cinema!

I have a beautifully framed photo of Nana with her silver cup when she won a cosmetology competition on the vanity and just behind it I keep my Hollywood lights makeup mirror with different settings including daytime, work, and nighttime. Dad bought me this one. As soon as he knew my last mirror bit the dust. He knew how important it was to replace it. The shopping hunt was on -- Sears, Filene's, Jordan Marsh and even Woolworth's! He wouldn't stop 'til he found it! That was Dad! I dread mentioning where we finally found it! No, not eBay!

When I sit on my vanity chair which is laced with Nana's fur fox tails I am in heaven! Surrounded by my fav perfumes and colors that enhance my eyes and face, moisturizers and creams applied at leisure, it's my time to relax and enjoy the transformation. Oh and it is a transformation! Lipsticks that are from Jungle Red to Orange Crush! Greens and purple and blue glitter eyeliners are my favs from Tony & Tina's line. No longer being manufactured for yet another divorce!

My Vanity, my friend, has weathered every move and now as I figure out how long this relationship has lasted I can understand why the makeup I wore at 19 years old has had to change its face during our thirty-eight years together!

For the Vanity of it all!

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!

Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend

Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend

Ciao bella,

Who would think that another one of Mother Nature's miracles is used esthetically, however not just to be counted in carots? It's Diamond Dust my dear ladies! Tiny particles left behind from the cutting of diamonds. The hardness of these tiny particles (similar as dust) make it a popular material used for a variety of products. Just about half of all natural Diamonds are found in mines throughout central and southern Africa. Originally found and mined in India diamond dust proved valuable in cosmetics. Even Madonna during one of her many tours combined white eyeshadow and diamond dust and applied it on her eyelids!

Diamonds as we all know look like transparent crystal and made of carbon, as its atoms are arranged in a diamond lattice. Diamond dust may be found in different colors and can be coarse or fine. Valuable for their hardness and heat conductivity industrial diamonds can be found in the use of surfacing products. Gem-grade diamonds are also valuable for their color and clarity. (The diamond coated pan in my kitchen has been a treasure in my culinary adventures!)

As a natural mineral diamonds are the hardest. Productively useful as an abrasive in cutting, drilling, grinding and polishing. You'll find nail files coated with diamond dust making the file stay sharp and lasting. Many nail products contain diamond dust to prevent chipping and also strengthen nails including a pretty shimmer effect. Check your labels for diamond dust which can also be found in creams, perfumes, shower gels and makeup. In my experience diamonds are a girls best friend!

Buona giornata and God bless the United States of America!
